Because of their public health significance, the major biochemical, metabolic, and physiological systems involved in the regulation of energy expenditure and balance and protein and amino acid, calcium, and iron metabolism were then discussed, including, within the context of each of these nutrients, the reactions of these systems when intakes exceed or fall below those judged to be adequate for maintenance of function in well-nourished individuals
