Various Approaches to the Management of Oral Submucous Fibrosis : A Review.

2021
Oral Submucous Fibrosis, an insidious, chronic, debilitating pre cancerous condition of the mouth, has been known from the times of Sushruta. In the more recent past a variety of treatment modalities have been developed to treat it, both medical and non medical, depending on the severity of the disease. Ranging from the most basic : counselling to eliminate the areca nut habit to prevent it from occurring to aggressive surgery to treat it along with the Squamous Cell Carcinoma that occurs as a result of it. Multiple treatment options are usually selected and combined, tailored to the needs of the individual in routine practise, for instance, frequently selected treatment options ( for Khanna and Andrade’s Grade III Patients ) for combination are counselling, nutritional supplementation and surgery with physiotherapy. This article presents a range of the available treatment options, medical & non medical, some used and some still in the experimental stage, for easy reference.
