Effect of carbon and nitrogen sources on the activity of methane oxidization in a paddy rice soil

2002
The effects of carbon and nitrogen sources on the added methane oxidation and the population methane\|oxidizing bacteria in marine\|fluvigenic yellow loamy paddy soil were studied. The results showed that the various carbon and nitrogen sources affect the added methane\| oxidizing activity significantly, but not the population of methane\|oxidizing bacteria. Also same substrate with different concentrations give various effects on the added methane\|oxidizing rate. Formate and methanol, (metabolic intermediates) and yeast extract, glucose and acetate, (non\|metabolic intermediate) are the inhibitors for the added methane oxidation. Inorganic nitrogen The effect on the added methane oxidation rate of inorgamc nitrogen resouce is strongen than organic nitrogen resources. Nitrate is the strongest one. The inhibition of ammonia was stronger to methane oxidation than that of ammonium. There is need a longer time for recovery after the activity of added methane oxidation is inhibited by carbon or nitrogen sources.
