During the Tertiary the basaltic ridge building a continuous land connection between Greenland and the British Isles separated the Greenland-Norwegian Sea (Scandic Sea) from the Atlantic. This is clearly evidenced by marine and terrestrial biota as well as the geological conditions of the Iceland-Faeroe-Ridge.
