Neuroendocrine tumors can produce hormones and vasoactive peptides whose overproduction leads to development of symptoms and syndromes due to various organic lesions, in particular to endocardial fibroelastosis and carcinoid heart disease in patients with cardiac disorders. Cardiovascular complications in patients with carcinoid syndrome are a leading cause of death, therefore timely diagnosis and treatment may considerably improve quality of life and prolong survival. The paper describes current state of knowledge about cardiac disorders associated with neuroendocrine tumors. It contains a brief historical overview, a detailed presentation of clinical symptoms, instrumental and biochemical diagnostic techniques, general guidelines for the treatment of carcinoid heart disease.
