2010
Background: In Alor District, a mass drug treatment using diethylcarbamazine citrat and albendazole has been done since 2002 by Alor District Health Office (DHO). Objective: To assess several aspects of filariasis situation and mass treatment program in this district. Methods: Primary data were collected cross sectionaly in one sentinel and one spot check villages. Secondary data such as DHO’s program, case management, and elimination activity were collected retrospectively using questionairs. Results: The results showed that in both villages microfilaria rate (Mf-rate) were reduced from 2.1% to 0% and 3% to 0%, respectively. Only one chronic case was found, in a female student. Advocations to the District Authority, and Elimination Program Policy had been prepared by DHO with the support of related institutions. Training on microscopy diagnostic and case management were done by the Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia in colaboration with the German Agency for Technical Cooperation. Conclusions: It is concluded that filariasis elimination program has been conducted succesfully in Alor island, eventhough in several villages Mf-rate remains >1%. Advocation to the District Authority has been done appropriately using an acurate baseline data of Mf-rate and knowledge-attidute-practice of the community agains filariasis. Field coordinator for mass drug administration, and case management in the hospital were well prepared. Recomendation: To obtain a consistent support from District Authority and participation from the community, advocation and health education programs should be done periodically. Preparedness of program management and human resourches in all administrative levels should be maintained to obtain maximum results. Key words: Filariasis, situation, Alor island, 2006
