The Influence of the Inclination of Transition over the Production of "Vertical Air"

2012
In this paper, in order to determine the shape of a snowboard course (currently known as a "halfpipe") to maximize the production of "vertical air", namely the maximum vertical distance above the edge of halfpipe, by a skilled snowboarder, we adjust the inclination for transition of the snowboard course. We begin with a simple and idealized model, gradually add additional assumptions, limitations and parameters, using the law of Newton Classic Mechanics and drawing free-body diagrams to analyze the forces and the processes of movement; meanwhile, we work out the relation between the inclination of transition and the production of "vertical air" with the help of the law of Conservation of Energy. At last, we use the actual data and fit them by means of MATLAB. After optimizing the model, we get the approximate range of the optimized angle, by concluding that when ¦E=71.6, the production of "vertical air" maximized.
