708 www.thelancet.com Vol 379 February 25, 2012 Authors’ reply Chiara Bibalo and colleagues correctly note that the maintenance asthma treatment was substantially diff erent when symptoms and fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) were used to adjust treatment. The reason for this diff erence is the symptom– FENO algorithm that was used. This algorithm identifi ed women with asthma who had few symptoms but increased FENO, who were at risk of asthma exacerbation, and controlled this with low-dose inhaled corticosteroid.
