An investigation into the prevalence of symptoms of “Partial” hypoparathyroidism following thyroidectomy

An investigation was made into the prevalence of symptoms suggestive of partial hypoparathyroidism in 154 patients submitted to subtotal thyroidectomy between January 1954 and December 1963. The assessment was made by means of a physical examination, a questionnaire and serum calcium estimation. Control calcium studies were performed in 40 hospital patients simultaneously. One hundred and twenty-seven patients were available for study and their parathyroid function was divided into three grades:
