The effect of diary method in the management of gestational diabetes

Objective To record diet, exercise, weight and medication information of gestational diabetes cases with diary methods and to strengthen guidance and self-supervision based on the information to monitor blood sugar to ensure smooth perinatal period of the patients. Methods One hundred and six cases of gestational diabetes were given cards with odd or even number and were randomized assigned to experimental group of 53 cases and control group of 53 cases. Participants in the experimental group were required to participate in diary record. Results The two groups didn't show significant differences in basic knowledge of gestational diabetes, relevant drugs and hypoglycemia handling methods (P0.05). However, the two groups were significantly different in diet, exercise and self-monitoring scores (P0.05). And they were also significantly different in blood sugar levels (P0.05). Conclusion Through diary records, gestational diabetes patients can improve self-management and disease-related knowledge, and health care workers can enhance understanding of the patient′s condition and help them make through pregnancy smoothly. In this way, patient satisfaction can also be increased. To conclude, the diary method can improve self-management and supervision of pregnancy diabetes patients and also provide clear guidance for health care workers to understand the patient′s condition.
