Signatures for mixed-symmetry states in the U(5) limit of the neutron-proton interacting boson model

The electromagnetic properties of the lowest mixed-symmetry states are investigated in the framework of the U(5) limit of the neutron-proton interacting boson model. Possible signatures for their identification are analyzed in detail with special emphasis on those quantities which are model independent.
