Increased concurrence of cirrhosis and bacterial endocarditis. A clinical and postmortem study.

Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is a disease of cirrhotic patients in which preexisting ascites is infected, supposedly by blood-borne bacteria. If this hypothesis is correct, other susceptible sites, such as the cardiac valves, might be similarly vulnerable. Consequently, we compared the frequency of bacterial endocarditis in cirrhotic and noncirrhotic patients both at autopsy and in life.
