Relationship between infection of Clonorchis sinensis and hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases

2004
Objective To investigate the concomitant hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases related to Clonorchis sinensis and explore their diagnosis and treatment. Methods The clinical data of 650 patients with Clonorchiosis treated in our hospital were retrospectively analyzed to determine the condition of concomitant hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery diseases. Results Of the 650 patients, 324 (49.85%) had the concomitant surgical diseases. Amongst these 324 patients, 289 (89.2%) had the biliary diseases, 19 (5.87%) hepatic diseases and 16 (4.94%) pancreatic diseases. The highest number of patients with the single disease of cholecystolithiasis was 184 (56.8%). Of all the 650 patients, 151 (23.3%) received operations and 22 were treated by endoscopic sphincterotomy. Conclusions Infection by Clonorchis sinensis plays a critical role in pathogenesis of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery diseases in endemic areas. The most common are biliary diseases, especially cholecystolithiasis.
