Abruptio Placentae: Maternal and Foetal Outcome

Objective: To ascertain the risk factors of abruptio placentae and assess maternal and foetal outcome. Methods: All women diagnosed with abruptio placentae admitted to Christian Medical CollegeaHospital, Ludhiana during a period of two years were included in the retrospective study. Results: A total of 62 women were studied. 37 women were unbooked, 47 were of low socio-economic status. A majority of them were in the age group of 25 to 35 years, of which 32 were multigravidae. The various risk factors were anaemia in 34, pre-eclampsia in 16, eclampsia in 6 women, diabetes in 2 and multiple pregnancy(twin pregnancy) in 2 of 62 women. Thirty six women had a normal delivery. Associated complications were postpartum haemorrhage in 20, intrauterine death in 15 women, coagulopathy in 12 and renal failure in 4 women. There were three maternal deaths. Of the 42 live births there were 7 neonatal deaths. Conclusions: Abruptio placentae till date remains a grave risk for a gravida. Efforts for prevention, timely diagnosis and prompt treatment are vital to improve maternal and foetal outcome.
