Thyroid Hormone and Blood Glucose Levels in Hyperthyroidism Secondary to Diabetes Mellitus

2009
Objective To explore the levels of thyroid hormone and blood glucose in clinical diagnosis and treatment of hyperthyroidism secondary to diabetes mellitus. Methods The data of 48 cases of patients with hyperthyroidism secondary to diabetes mellitusin our hospital from Jan.2005 to Oct.2008 were summarized and analyzed. Results Comparison of thyroid hormone of two groups by the statistical analysis,(P 0.05),with no significant difference.Comparison of fasting glucose,2h postprandial blood glucose of two groups by the statistical analysis(P0.05)showed a significant difference.Among 48 cases,21 cases were of simple oral hypoglycemic medication, and insulin injection therapy,at the same time, with anti-thyroid drug for 27 cases. In 18 cases of hyperthyroidism secondary diabetes, the blood glucose reduced to normal after hyperthyroidism was controlled. In 30 cases of hyperthyroidism with diabetes,10 cases had insulin dosage reduction after controlling hyperthyroidism was controlled,9 cases changed to the therapy of oral hypoglycemic agent and the dose of oral hypoglycemic agents was reduced in 11 cases after controlling hyperthyroidism was controlled. Conclusion Since diabetes mellitus secondary to hyperthyroidism is not uncommon in clinical practice,we should have deep understanding of the disease and improve the diagnosis rate to reduce misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis to the maximum extent. After a clear diagnosis, the treatment of diabetes and hyperthyroidism should be balanced in order to enhance clinical efficacy.
