Performance analysis of muffler with vertical inlet/outlet based on CFD

Based on the method of computational fluid dynamics,the performances of mufflers with vertical inlet/outlet were analyzed by taking into account of acoustic and aerodynamic characteristics.First,the transmission loss of vertical inlet/outlet mufflers with various insert lengths was calculated with the one-dimensional CFD software GT-power and the results were compared and analyzed;three-dimensional CFD software FLUENT was also applied to accomplish the numeric simulation of flow field characteristics in order to calculate the pressure loss curve of various models and analyze other affecting factors.It was also obtained the distributions of velocity and turbulent kinetic energy of the in the muffler chamber through simulation.Its flow characteristics were further analyzed and the two better structural configurations were picked out from the models discussed in this paper based on the comprehensive analysis of acoustic and aerodynamic characteristics.Thus,the analytical results can provide a foundation for design and optimization of the mufflers.
