The Acute Management of Paediatric Nephrotic Syndrome

2014
Aims - The purpose of this audit was to assess the initial management of first presentation paediatric nephrotic syndrome to ensure it is safe, evidence based and that patients and parents are given appropriate discharge advice. Methods – Audit criteria were agreed based on local hospital guidelines in addition to 2 other London hospital protocols for nephrotic syndrome. Written and electronic notes from 10 children, presenting over the past 11 years were reviewed against 36 audit standards. Results – Most audit standards recommended by Trust guidelines were followed in full. Blood parameters, some aspects of management, and discharge advice, which were recommended by other Trusts, were still carried out in some patients, but not achieved in all. Conclusions – Incorporating the additional blood parameters recommended in other guidelines can ensure that the diagnostic workup and management of this condition is optimum. A checklist has been developed to ensure adequate discharge.
