Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell–Derived Cardiomyocytes in Advancing Cardiovascular Medicine

2014
Since the advent of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology a decade ago, significant advances have been made in the basic science and translational realms to better understand human diseases at the cellular level and to develop new therapies. In particular, cardiomyocytes derived from human iPSCs (hiPSC-CMs) are revolutionizing cardiovascular disease modeling and have become an invaluable resource for pharmacological testing. Given the advances outlined here, hiPSCs will play a prominent role in the development of personalized therapies for congenital and acquired heart diseases.
