Ciprofloxacin resistance in campylobacters from chickens in Grenada.

2012
To assess the rates of ciprofloxacin resistance among zoonotic campylobacter isolates from chickens in commercial farms in Grenada, 125 chickens were examined for Campylobacter Jejuni, C.coli and C.lari in their ceca. Of a total of 64 isolates recovered, 21 were C. jejuni, 39 C.coli, and 4 C.lari. Eight isolates (12.5%) were resistant to ciprofloxacin, 6 of which showed additional resistance to one or more of the following drugs: ampicillin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, erythromycin, tetracycline, and metronidazole. The emergence of zoonotic campylobacters resistant to ciprofloxacin in chickens is of public health concern.
