Diseases of the eye

2020
Abstract The comprehensive list of various eye disorders includes congenital malformations, eye infections, and other acquired pathologies. If inherited and infectious diseases are excluded from the list, the most common causes of blindness are glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataract, and diabetic retinopathy. Among these, cataract is the one most easily diagnosed and treatable by surgery. Diabetic retinopathy is the late complication of diabetes mellitus. Early detection and the timely treatment of diabetes mellitus help prevent diabetic retinopathy. The following chapter focuses on glaucoma, cataract, and age-related macular degeneration as the most common eye disorders with no effective treatment yet.
