The Managements of Diabetes Mellitus Medical Aid Patients and Their Comorbidities and Complications

2015
Ba ckground: Because Medicaid beneficiaries (MB) have lower economical status than the National Health Insurance (NHI), MB do not receive adequate medical treatment for the type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). The objective of this study was to investigate the quality of medical care for type 2 DM inpatients. Me thods: Between March 1, 2013 and December 31, 2014, we retrospectively analyzed the diabetic inpatients’ medical records at a local general hospital. The patients were classified into two groups: MB (n = 42) and NHI (n = 132). The clinical findings; laboratory data; comorbidities such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, smoking rate and drinking rate; and complications were compared between the two groups. Re sults: The MB group had significantly higher hemoglobin A1c levels and dyslipidemia ratio than the NHI group. In addition, the rates of smoking and alcohol consumption in the MB group were markedly higher than those in the NHI group. Conclusion: Because the DM management was insufficient in the MB group, we should provide intensive health care for the MB patients.
