LATE-BREAKING ABSTRACT: Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in COPD and its association with severity of disease

Background: COPD patients would be at risk for the metabolic syndrome. Present of metabolic syndrome increase morbidity and mortality of COPD patients. Thus this study is an attempt to find out the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in association with the severity of COPD. Objective: To study the Prevalence of metabolic syndrome in COPD and its association with severity of disease. Materials and Methods: It is a cross sectional study carried in COPD patients(Diagnosed using GOLD criteria). In all patients Fasting lipid prolife, FBS, PPBS, HBA1C, BMI, Waist/Hip ratio was done. NPET ATP III criteria was used to for diagnosis of metabolic syndrome. Results: During the study period, total of 116 COPD patients were taken and 58(49.57%) patients were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. Conclusion: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in COPD patients is high, specially in moderate grade of COPD.
