Abstract 19909: Ovarian Vein Thrombosis: Risk Factors and Outcomes

2016
Introduction: The natural history of ovarian vein thrombosis (OVT) is not currently well described in the literature. Risk factor and recurrence data would help in the development of optimal treatment strategies. Methods: The goal of this project was to compare OVT with lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) with regard to etiology of thrombosis, venous thromboembolism (VTE) recurrence, and survival. Patients with OVT between 1990 and 2015 were identified and a chart review was performed. Age and diagnosis date matched DVT controls were identified. Results: A total of 219 OVT cases were compared with 219 DVT controls. Mean duration of follow-up was 3.7 ± 3.7 years (range 0-15.4 years). Baseline VTE risk factors are shown in Table 1. OVT patients were less frequently treated with anticoagulation than DVT patients [118 (54%) vs. 213 (97%), p Conclusions: Patients with OVT more frequently have cancer and underlying infection as compared to DVT. VTE recurrence rate and survival are not significantly different for OVT as compared to DVT, but those with a history of previous VTE are most likely to have VTE recurrence.
