The association of postprandial blood glucose level with brachial ankle pulse wave velocity

2014
Objective To study the association of postprandial blood glucose level with brachial ankle pulse wave velocity(BaPWV) in middle-aged and elderly population. Methods Two thousand five hundred and nineteen subjects aged 40 years or older from Jiading district, Shanghai were recruited to undergo questionnaire interview, anthropometric measurements, biochemical evaluation and BaPWV measurement. After excluding subjects with missing BaPWV or postprandial data, two thousand three hundred and seventy-seven subjects were enrolled in the final analysis(989 men and 1388 women). The association of BaPWV and postprandial blood glucose level,as well as the prevalence of arteriosclerosis, was analyzed by multiple Logistic regression analysis according to the four quartiles of postprandial blood glucose level. Results From postprandial blood glucose level quartile 1 to quartile 4, the average BaPWV is(1429.85±401.90),(1425.70±383.31),(1594.77±403.23),(1709.11±399.05) cm/s, respectively; The prevalence of arteriosclerosis is 15.40%, 16.42%, 27.97%, 40.57%, accordingly. The trend among groups is significant(P0.0001). Postprandial blood glucose level is positively correlated with BaPWV(r =0.25514, P 0.0001). Postprandial blood glucose level is an independent risk factor of BaPWV(β=0.0906, P=0.0008). After adjusting for sex, age, body mass index(BMI), waist circumstance, systolic blood pressure(SBP), diastolic blood pressure(DBP), triglycerides(TG), total cholesterol(TC), lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), fasting insulin, fasting blood glucose level, glycated hemoglobin A1c(HbA1c), compared with the quartile 1, the risk of prevalence of arteriosclerosis in subjects with postprandial blood glucose level of quartile 3 and quartile 4 rise significantly. The odds ratio and 95% confidence interval is 1.669(1.098-2.539), 1.713(1.094-2.682), respectively(P=0.0036). Conclusions Postprandial blood glucose level is a significant and independent risk factor of arteriosclerosis.
