Streptococcus pneumoniae infection and drug resistance in Japan

: In Japan, 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine was introduced in 2010. The population-based survey of invasive infection in child revealed that 62.7% of the S. pneumoniae isolates showed equal or more than 0.125 microg/mL of penicillin G MIC. ST320 with serotype 19A S. pneumoniae isolates showed 2-4 microg/mL and 0.25-0.5 microg/mL MICs of penicillin G and meropenem, respectively. The early introduction of PCV13 in Japan is anticipated.
