The Red Leg

2021
An itchy, red lower leg may be caused by eczema/dermatitis, psoriasis or tinea infection. A painful, red lower leg can be more sinister and may be caused by infection, an ulcer or a deep venous thrombosis (DVT). All cases need thorough investigation to find out the underlying cause. Urgent referral may be required for serious problems such as cellulitis or a DVT. If both legs are red then the diagnosis may be due to a generalized skin condition such as psoriasis or atopic eczema, a systemic disease such as vasculitis or directly related to venous hypertension such as varicose eczema.
