The etiology of airway foreign bodies in children: analytical cohort study

Introduction: The aspiration of foreign bodies(FB) in children’s respiratory tract is a major urgency, even in the asymptomatic cases that can endanger the child9s life at any time. Aims: The aime of the research was to study the etiology of airway FB in children of different ages. Methods: The cohort analytical study includes 93 children hospitalized in the Pulmonology Clinic for over a 5-year period (2012-2017), showing a positive history of foreign body aspiration. They underwent a bronchoscopy examination for diagnostic and treatment. Results: The study found a high frequency of airway FB in children under 3years(89,2%: 95CI, 81,1-94,7; χ2 =9,98; p Conclusions: The aspiration of FB in the respiratory tract is frequently met in children of 1-2 years old, with a major predominance of organic foreign bodies, usually sunflower seeds and nuts.
