Expression and clinical significance of serum VEGF and TRACP-5b in patients with multiple myeloma

2009
Objective To explore the changes and clinical significances of serum vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase isoform-5b(TRACP-5b) in multiple myeloma(MM).Methods The serum levels of VEGF and TRACP-5b were detected with ELISA in patients with MM(group MM) and the controls(group C).Results The MM patients had significantly higher serum levels of VEGF and TRACP-5b than the controls(P0.01).Serum levels of VEGF were elevated and correlated with clinical stages with the highest in stage Ⅲ.TRACP-5b levels showed great difference among different bone lesion scores(P0.05).Serum levels of VEGF and TRACP-5b were significantly reduced by the combination of thalidomide and pamidronate with VAD-chemotherapy(P0.01).Conclusion Serum levels of VEGF and TRACP-5b are increased in MM patients, which is related to MM disease progression and the extent of myeloma bone disease and may be taken as the markers for evaluating the prognisis during follow up after the treatment of antimyeloma.
