Prevention in diabetics

1978
Contraceptive methods for diabetics are discussed. The mechanical methods e.g. condom diaphragm as well as the IUD can be used by diabetics the same as non-diabetics although the use of the IUD increases the risk of infection which could cause complications in older diabetics. Mini-pills can be used by diabetics the same as non-diabetics but the menstrual irregularities they cause make them undesirable. Combination preparations can cause changes in carbohydrate and fat metabolism and should therefore only be used in cases where the patient has uncomplicated diabetes and sterilization or other contraceptive methods are not possible. Sterilization is a safe contraceptive method for diabetics and can be used where medical or personal reasons indicate that the patient should or would have no more children.
