Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the hospital acquired infections among the hospitalized patients between January 01, 2006 and December 31, 2006 in 820 bed Firat University Hospital. Materials and Methods: Data regarding hospital acquired infections were collected with laboratory and patient based active surveillance method and description of Disease Control and Prevention were used in the diagnosis of these infections. Results: The hospital acquired infection ratio was found to be 5.97 % during this period. Most of the hospital infections were detected from Intensive Care Unit of Anesthesia and Reanimation Department (57.1 % ), followed by Cardiothoacic Surgery Intensive Care Unit (16.3 %) and Neurology Clinics (13.1 %). Most common infections were urinary tract infections (41.6 %), boodstream infection (22.5%), pneumonia (18.7 %) and surgical site infection (10.4 %), respectively. Most encountered organisms were Escherichia Coli, Pseudomonas spp., coagulase negative staphylocoocci, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida spp and Klebsiella spp. Methicilline resistance was 85.8 % among S. aureus species. E. coli, Klebsiella spp. and Pseudomonas spp. had ratios of extended spectrum beta lactamase as 47.8 %, 50.6 % and 56.7 % , respectively. Conclusion: The disemination of survelliance and training studies of infection control committee in our hospital and formation of self hospital infection control policy way lower these ratios in the future.
