Recurrent Diabetes Following Bariatric Surgery: Incidence and Management

2020
While bariatric surgery has been shown to be the most effective treatment for type-2 diabetes (T2D), recurrence following an initial period of remission is a known phenomenon. The purpose of this review is to better characterize the incidence and management of recurrent diabetes following bariatric surgery. The durability of T2D remission is heavily influenced on the severity of baseline disease, adherence to prescribed life-style modifications, and to a lesser extent, procedure type. Recurrent diabetes following bariatric surgery is significant and challenging to manage. Therapeutic options range from medical management to revisional surgery. Treatment algorithms should follow a tiered approach, starting with the least invasive modality. Thus, a multidisciplinary approach is essential.
