PRIMARY IDIOPATHIC POLYMYOSITIS TYPE-1 : A CASE REPORT

A patient who presented to us with pain and weakness in all four limbs since 2 months. Initially patient was treated for fever with severe prostration. After partial relief, the patient developed progressive weakness in bilateral upper and lower limbs. Evaluation for symmetrical proximal muscle weakness revealed idiopathic inflammatory myopathy which on muscle biopsy was diagnosed as Primary idiopathic polymyositis type – 1. Long term steroid therapy was given which caused improvement in weakness. Idiopathic inflammatory myopathy is always should be considerd in patients presenting with weakness of limbs as it is acquired and potentially treatable cause of skeletal muscle weakness.
