Can acute renal function impairment in advanced neoplasmatic disease be an indication for haemodialysis

Advanced cancer constitutes usually a contradiction for haemodialysis. However, when the renal function impairment is due to reversible and especially iatrogenic factors, haemodialysis should be considered. In some of these cases haemodialysis could be instituted for a period of time. Here we describe a patient with prostatic cancer and multiple myeloma who experienced acute anuria and increasing renal function impairment. This patient was dialyzed several times and his general condition dramatically improved. After discontinuation of dialysis the renal function remained at the level from before the exacerbation. We discuss here factors which may be responsible for acute renal function loss, which might influence patients’ qualification for haemodialysis.
