Application of Multimodal EEG in Coma Patients

2022
Patients with severe brain injury are mostly in a coma during the acute stage. Most comatose patients will recover their consciousness in a short period of time. However, some patients do not recover consciousness for a long time due to severe neurological deficits, eventually developing a persistent hyporesponsive state, VS, or even death. The medical expenses of patients who continue to be in a coma are enormous, conveying a heavy economic burden and huge psychological pressure to society and family members. Therefore, understanding the severity of brain damage in coma patients, early judgment of the prognosis of consciousness disturbance, and effective wake-up treatment are the focus of treatment in the NICU. This chapter briefly describes the methods of brain function assessment in patients with impaired consciousness, focusing on the application of multimodal EEG in patients with impaired consciousness, and helps critically ill doctors use multimodal EEG to accurately assess the brain functions of patients, providing effective information on patients with impaired consciousness to detect changes in their condition over time, observe treatment responses, and determine the severity of brain injury and early prognosis.
