Effects of L-carnitine and trimetazidine on exercise tolerance in patients with stable angina pectoris

2003
Objectives To evaluate the efficacy of L-carnitine and trimetazidine on exercise tole-rance in patients with stable angina pectoris. Methods 60 patients with hyperlipoidemia proved coronary artery disease by angiography were given randomly L-carnitine or trimetazidine for 12 weeks. Treadmill exercise testing was adopted to investigate exercise tole-rance before and after therapy. Results After the the-rapy of L-carnitine or trimetazidine, angina petoris attack and consumption of nitroglycerin weekly were decreased obviously (P0.01). The time for inducing angina, the time for 0.1 mV ST segment depression, the total exercise time and ∑ST depression by exercise were improved obviously (P0.05). The serum total cholesterol, triglyceride were decreased by 17%, 15%, respectively. HDL-Cholesterol levels were increased by 14% by L-carnitine (P0.05). Conclusions Both L-carnitine and trimetazidine have obvious Anti-ischemic efficacy on patients with stable angina pectoris, improve myocardial ischemia and exercise tolerance induced by exercise, L-carnitine improves Lipid profile also.
