NiO and CuO coated monolithic oxygen carriers for chemical looping combustion of methane

2020
Abstract Chemical looping combustion is considered as a new combustion technology which can generate electricity and long-term capture carbon because of its inherent separation of CO2. As a typical gas-solid reaction, the geometric structure of oxygen carriers is closely related to the reaction kinetics. In this work, NiO/cordierite monolithic oxygen carrier and CuO/cordierite monolithic oxygen carrier were prepared by solution combustion method. Comparing the chemical looping combustion performance of pellet oxygen carrier and monolithic oxygen carrier under different flow rates, it is found that the monolithic oxygen carrier has stronger adaptability under large flow rates. In addition, by combining different order of oxygen carriers, it is found that NiO/cordierite monolithic oxygen carrier in front and CuO/cordierite monolithic oxygen carriers in the back can give full play to the advantages of the two parts of oxygen carriers, significantly improve CH4 conversion(>98%) and CO2 selectivity(>97%), and there is no carbon deposition.
