This manuscript reviews the beginning of the appearance of the AIDS syndromein mid-1980in homosexuals in the U.S.A. which had presented with Kaposi's sarcoma,Pneumocystis cariniiinfections, low blood T-helper cells (CD4+), and reversal of CD4/CD8 T-cells ratio. Later the disease appeared to be transmitted by sexual intercourse and blood productsand was recognized in other parts of the world. Originally termed "HTLV-III". it was renamed "HIV". Modes of transmission of HIV. its epidemiology, pathophysiology of HIVIAIDS, case definitions of AIDS. AIDS-defining conditions. clinico-pathological featuresof HIV disease,and the impact of therapy on HIV disease are discussed.
