The Effect of Selenium on the Hepatic Fibrosis of Rats

2007
Objective:To observe the effect of supplying different level of selenium on the content of selenium in rat serum and experimental hepatic fibrosis. Methods: 50 wistar rats were divided into the healthy control group, model CCl_4 group, high content of sugar group, high dosage of selenium group and low dosage of selenium group, and the last four groups were injected with 0.15 ml CCl_4 oily liquor two times per week, totally 6 weeks. The last three groups were respectively administered sugar in high content, glucose acid selenium in order to observe the effect of each case on the content of selenium in rat serum, the function of liver and the course of hepatic fibrosis. Results: The serum ALT increased at the third week and the sixth week in using selenium group, model CCl_4 group and high content of sugar group, but there was obvious difference in the content of AST between the model group, high sugar group and the selenium group which the content of AST was distinctly decreased(P0.05 or P0.01),the content of serum selenium in the two selenium groups was all obviously higher than the model group(P0.01) at the sixth week, maintaining at the normal level and having the negative effect on the hepatic fibrosis of rats. There was no obvious difference between the two selenium groups. The high content of sugar caused increase in the weight of rats and the hepatic fibrosis did not decreased in severity in the high content of sugar group. Conclusion: The effect of supplying selenium on the serum selenium of animals with liver injury and the hepatic fibrosis represents at the late time, and long term and low content of supplying selenium may be more effective and safe.
