Efforts to Use the Direct Observation Model to Ensure Compliance with Urinary Catheter Care Protocols

Results: Guidelines for cleaning and disinfection for the point of care bar code scanner mobile computer were added to the Infection Prevention Department policy on ‘‘Disinfectant Guidelines and Cleaning of Patient Care Equipment’’ and the education pocket guide developed for the clinical units. Clinical staff of the pediatric unit developed a motto used in the pocket guide, ‘‘Clean on the way in and Clean on the way out’’. Monitoring for cleanliness of the bar code scanner mobile units with a fluorescent dye and ultra-violet light was cumbersome, yet provided a good visual demonstration.
