Phase transitions and metastability in neural nets

1989
The purpose of this study is to find a unified explanation of various data on single neuronal, EEG, and behavioral levels simultaneously. Specifically, the authors seek a unified view on cortico-septo-hippocampal system function. The main results are that: (a) phase transitions in the brain are not a theoretical framework only useful for unified explanation of numerous facts, but real brain phenomena existing at the various levels of neuronal organizations; and (b) the principle of phase synchronization or, more generally, the principle of Ukhtomskii's dominant as a system manifestation of phase transitions in the central nervous system is probably the main principle of brain functioning. >
