Seizures in Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVT) is a common cause of stroke in the young. Risk factors for CVT are inherited or acquired pro-thrombotic states. Pregnancy and puerperium are among the most important acquired transient pro-thrombotic conditions that predispose to CVT. Seizures occur in about 35–40 % of patients with CVT and can be classified as focal or generalized, and early (< 2 weeks) or late. Pooled analyses of existing literature demonstrate that focal motor deficits, cortical venous thrombosis, and supratentorial parenchymal lesions are associated with an increased risk of early seizures. The occurrence of early seizures after CVT is a risk factor for the later development of epilepsy. Seizures in CVT are a cause of significant morbidity and may require long-term treatment.
