Summary Vertical maternal fetal transmission of the virus chikungunya Ten cases among 84 pregnant women The authors report for the first time maternal-fetal transmissions ofthe chikungunya virus observed during the 2005-2006 epidemichaving occurred at first in the Southern part of Reunion island (Frenchoverseas department, Indian Ocean) since March 2005, before sprea-ding in the Northern part of the island at the end of 2005. The expe-rience comes from the Groupe Hospitalier Sud-Reunion where thefirst cases of pregnant women have been recorded since June 2005.From June 2005 to the 31st of January 2006, 84 pregnant womenhave presented a chikungunya attack during the course of their pre-gnancy. In 88 % of cases (n = 74), newborns have been consideredto be safe at birth; all these women had made their disease at dis-tance of their deliveries. Conversely, 10 newborns have presentedsevere attacks (4 meningo-encephalitis, 3 intra-vascular coagula-tions) after birth necessiting prolonged hospitalizations in the neo-natal department (of which 6 neonates in the Neonatal Intensive
