Examining the use of technology within lectures by students and teachers to aid learning

Due to technological expansion, IT has now become ubiquitous within everyday life, and current students have grown up using personal devices constantly within all aspects of their lives. Because of this, many universities and colleges are now looking to implement personal devices within lectures into their curriculums, whether it be through students bringing in theirs, or the institutes implementing their own. This study's purpose is to investigate the use of IT and personal devices within lectures by both students, and lecturers, as well as the assortment of benefits and drawbacks that are brought to all involved. The study also looks to analyse and assess the various perceptions of the students and lecturers through the primary research methods, and inspect whether personal devices have the potential to increase a student's ability to learn, and improve their overall grades. The two forms of primary research conducted were questionnaires, and interviews, and were conducted with first and second year students from the School of Computing, as well as lecturers from the School of Computing, and the Department of Mathematics. A variety of quantitative, and qualitative analysis methods were conducted on the results, and from this discussions and conclusions could be formed on the subject.
