Letter by Nardi and Milia Regarding Article, “Translational Stroke Research of the Combination of Thrombolysis and Antioxidant Therapy”

2011
To the Editor: In a recent article in Stroke, 1 Amaro and Chamorro describe the scarce evidence in support of previous neuroprotective drugs and emphasize the neuroprotection proprieties of uric acid (UA) administration currently evaluating in an ongoing clinical trial combined to thrombolytic therapy in the light of (1) its demonstration of antioxidant mechanisms in cerebral Ischemia models; (2) its safe administration to humans; (3) the rapid consumption of UA after a stroke; and (4) the better outcome in stroke patients with higher UA levels (taken before thrombolytic therapy or within 72 hours from onset). We show in consecutive first-ever patients with acute ischemic stroke, whose symptoms have started <12 hours beforehand, an interaction between lower UA levels and a better neurological outcome at Day 7. This is a retrospective analysis of data prospectively …
