Preparation of monodispersed polystyrene microspheres by emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization

2012
Polystyrene microspheres were successfully prepared through emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization, employing potassium persulfate as initiator, styrene as monomers. The effects of the reaction parameters such as the monomer concentration in the systems, the initiator dosage and adding mode, polymerization temperature on the particle size were investigated. The microsphere composition, surface morphology, surface potential, particle size and its distribution were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, potential and nano particle size analyzer. The results showed that the microspheres prepared by the method were uniform and monodisperse. The monodispersed microspheres with the size from 100 to 200nm were obtained.
