Aerodynamic Performance Evaluation of Bionic Inspired Low Speed Wind Turbine Blade

2016
The main objective of this paper is to investigate the aerodynamic performance of the rotor blade with the deployed slat inspired by the wing shape of owl with the aid of NACA 0012. The deployed slat airfoils created, analyzed using CFD and are then compared to the normal airfoil. NACA 0012 is selected as the airfoil shape as it has low speed performance characteristics. The bionic slat chord length is 25% of stowed chord, geometric settings of bionic slat are angle 0°, gap 0.9%, overhang 20% of chord length of blade profile. The results are used to characterize high-lift effect: compared with the stowed slat, the deployed slat works more like a spoiler at low angles of attack, but like a conventional slat or slot at high angles of attack. In addition, it can also increase stall angle and postpone the decrease in the gradient of the lift coefficient.
