The invention provides a method for labeling a drug in areas of hypoxic tissue and / or ischemic within the body wherein the desired drug species is attached to a non-cytotoxic bioreductive carrier. The invention also provides a novel bioreductive conjugate comprising a non-cytotoxic bioreductive medium with at least one therapeutic agent attached thereto. The compounds of the invention are particularly suitable for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and other arthritic conditions, such as diabetes, arteriosclerosis, stroke, sepsis, Alzheimner disease and other neurological disorders, cancer, kidney disease, digestive diseases, liver, chronic periodontitis or ischemia appearing tissue after transplantation.
