Abstract 14946: Loss-framed Financial Incentives and Personalized Goal Setting Increase Physical Activity in Ischemic Heart Disease Patients Using Wearable Devices: The ACTIVE REWARD Randomized Clinical Trial

2017
Introduction: Physical activity programs reduce morbidity and mortality in ischemic heart disease (IHD) patients. Most patients, however, are unable to access such programs and obtain enough physical activity. We designed a randomized clinical trial to assess the hypothesis that a 24-week program utilizing loss-framed financial incentives with personalized goal setting using a wearable device (WD) could increase physical activity in IHD patients. Methods: 105 patients used a WD to track daily steps and establish a baseline during a 2-week run-in period. Patients were randomly assigned to control, in which they received no other interventions for 24 weeks or to the incentive arm. Patients in the incentive arm received daily feedback via text message, automated phone call, or email for all 24 weeks. In the ramp-up incentive phase (weeks 1-8), daily step goals increased by 15% each week and then remained fixed during the maintenance incentive phase (weeks 9-16) and the follow-up phase without incentives (wee...
