Cytomegalovirus infection is an important complication and the most common cause of morbidity and mortality following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation Pre transplant cytomegalovirus infection in the recipient is the most important risk factor associated with the development of infection Transfusion of cytomegalovirus positive blood products is another major cause that increases the risk of infection Cytomegalovirus infection is defined as recovery of the virus in culture whereas identification of the virus in tissue specimens or in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid is considered cytomegalovirus disease The most common and important clinical syndrome associated with cytomegalovirus infection is interstitial pneumonia Recently major progress has been accomplished in the prophylaxis of cytomegalovirus infection Gancylovir and intravenous immunoglobulin have been shown to significantly reduce the mortality of CMV disease Monitorization of cytomegalovirus is done by weekly urine and buffy coat cultures In this review we will discuss various methods of prophylaxis for cytomegalovirus infection Key nbsp;words: nbsp;Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation Cytomegalovirus Prophylaxis Treatment
