Abstract 18939: Risk of Cardiovascular Events Amongst Patients Receiving Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Prostate Cancer

2017
Introduction: Prostate Cancer (PC) is the most common cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death amongst Canadian men. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is the first-line treatment for PC. The relationship between ADT and cardiovascular disease is controversial and remains a debated topic within the literature. Existing studies have reached opposing conclusions, often due to their variability in excluding patients with pre-existing cardiac conditions. In this study, we aimed to determine whether the use of ADT in PC patients is associated with an increase in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study within a provincial linked database of elderly cardiac patients with prostate cancer diagnosis between 2000 and 2011. Eligible PC patients were stratified according to ADT use, and followed until occurrence of the primary outcome, death or study termination. The primary outcome was the composite of myocardial infarction (MI) or death due to myocardial i...
